In 1966, the production of the one millionth Mustang was the focus of advertising. There were many more cost-conscious and economically minded Mustang buyers than performance-hungry ones. The marketing department in Dearborn was well aware of this. To boost sales of the basic six-cylinder models, Ford designed another special model. The Mustang Sprint 200, usually offered as a convertible or hardtop and more rarely as a fastback, shone with decorative stripes on the sides. There were also spoke-look wheel covers and a center console. The 200 cid in-line six-cylinder engine was dressed up with a chrome-plated air filter housing with special lettering. The performance wasn't breathtaking, but the Sprint 200 still demonstrated that everyday usability doesn't have to be boring: Something Mustang buyers have known for a long time anyway.
After almost 700,000 Mustangs had been produced in the 1965 model year, Ford built a further 607,000 units in 1966. A facelift was not carried out as it was not really necessary. The body shape remained practically the same, with the only changes being a few trim strips. Demand remained unbroken.
Under the hood, the customer could choose between different engine versions, which had a significant influence on the character of the vehicle. The economical 6-cylinder engine was an option for those who valued efficiency. However, the V8 engines, especially the 289 variants, were the favorites for performance enthusiasts. The engines were identified by codes such as the "T" for the 6-cylinder or the "A" for the 289-V8, and these letter combinations became a sort of secret language among Mustang enthusiasts.
The Shelby GT350H, also known as the "Rent-A-Racer", is a variant of the Ford Mustang that was created in collaboration with Carroll Shelby. This special version was produced in limited numbers in 1966 and was part of a unique program supported by Hertz, a car rental company. The idea behind the Shelby GT350H was to give customers the opportunity to rent a high-performance, race-oriented car. The GT350H was equipped with the 289cc high-performance V8 engine, which gave the car impressive power. These engines were often designated with the famous "HIPO" or "K-code" and produced around 306 hp.
